Heliane Canepa is bursting with pride: FCZ has the most national team players at the World Cup

It has long been a tradition at the winter training camps that Heliane Canepa (75) leads the FCZ delegation and husband Ancillo (70) stays home with the dogs. Now it’s the same at summer camp: the Canepas didn’t want to put their two four-legged friends through the three-hour ride in the heat.

So Heliane Canepa sits on the porch of the Tyrolean amateur club SV Prutz and watches the train of the professionals from Zurich. She wears a bright red bodice. The shirt comes from the new FCZ women’s training collection, chosen by the club owner himself. However, five Zurich women are currently wearing the national red due to the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia – no other club has more players in Switzerland’s 23-man squad.

Coach Grings also has an FCZ past

Canepa says: “The FCZ can be proud of that. And I am very proud of my women myself. We have five in the World Cup selection, even though they are not professionals. And the trainer also comes from FCZ University I’m proud of that too.”

The FCZ Uni? The Canepas coined the term to show that their club continues to train players, coaches and officials who then generate desire elsewhere. Men’s sports director Marinko Jurendic (45) goes to the Bundesliga, in women SFV football boss Marion Daube (46) and Nati trainer Inka Grings (44) have an FCZ past.

Canepa assures that she will watch the World Cup matches. “When our players are there, we will definitely take a look. Cillo is also watching. The women are fully integrated into our club.”

Since the whole club is at home in FCZ’s new house, more synergies can be exploited. “The weight room, for example, is just as accessible to women. This way they can also use machines that would otherwise not fit within their budget. They really appreciate that,” says the club owner. And Canepa emphasizes: The focus is also on the offspring. “A lot of money goes into it, we also have youth teams for men and women with the right staff.”

Back to the national team. The five Swiss World Cup riders are: Seraina Piubel (23), Julia Stierli (26), Nadine Riesen (23), Seraina Friedli (30) and Fabienne Humm (36). Striker Humm has never played for any club other than Zurich and was recently extended until 2024.
