Commentary on the doping games: an idea for the regular table – nothing more

Aron D’Souza can be sure of one thing. The regular table will cheer. Finally someone says it! It’s doping-infused anyway, professional sport! Have them release everything right away!

The man is right on two important points: Sport still has a problem with dopers. And the IOC has become a troubled organization.

His proposed solution with the “Enhanced Games” still doesn’t help. Because he can’t answer some questions:

– Who’s going to participate? If you pump yourself full of doping and want to compete in the Enhanced Games, you can’t go back to your traditional discipline afterwards. So there will be a maximum of second-rate athletes to admire.

– D’Souza says doctors should keep accurate records of what drugs they give their athletes. Aside from the fact that there are serious ethical questions at play here; to make sure that only the supposedly clean drugs were actually used, tests would have to be done again. Which would give us the same problem as today’s doping hunters.

– Is an 18-year-old athlete really mature enough to be aware of the possible consequences of a doping regime? What about sports where the performance peak is reached at a young age?

– Science knows little about the long-term consequences of doping. But who pays for the long-term damage? Our health insurers?

Conclusion: wipe out the IOC? Can you want. But it does not work like that.
