A video has been circulating on the internet for a few days. It shows a runner spitting out big noises. “I’m the fastest man in the world,” he claims. He broke the world record in the 100 meters held by Usain Bolt. “The Olympics hate me.” He doesn’t show his face. Because he was baptized.
Aron D’Souza (38), on the other hand, does not hide. The Australian entrepreneur wants the term doping to disappear from the sports world. His idea: reinvent the Olympic Games, wresting them from the clutches of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which he describes as greedy and corrupt. And above all: To get the athletes to use performance-enhancing drugs. So: legalize doping. D’Souza calls his idea “Enhanced Games”, and the first event will take place in December 2024.
“Nowadays anyone under medical supervision can take any substance that Lance Armstrong took,” D’Souza told the “Spiegel”. “That is our idea: that athletes only use performance-enhancing drugs under medical supervision – and do not order items on the dark web that could pose a health risk.” A kind of safe doping. Just like in Formula 1, the cars are sewn and tinkered with, the bodies of the athletes have to be tuned. “We only want to admit athletes who state in a medical certificate which doctor has performed which therapy on them. And it confirms that the athlete is fit to compete.” The Swiss ex-Schimmer David Karasek, who took part in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, also supports the idea.
“My body, my choice. Your body, your decision,” D’Souza says in the Guardian. “People who are adults and have given their free and informed consent should be able to do whatever they want with their bodies.”
Legalized doping in sport would be nothing short of a revolution. But how realistic is that? Is there such a thing as clean doping? The answer from the Swiss sports umbrella organization Swiss Olympic is crystal clear. “There is no safe doping,” said spokesman Fabio Gramegna. “Swiss Olympic does not support the Enhanced Games idea. Doping substances pose major health risks to athletes. In our view, the risk of abuse and a health risk for the athletes would be too great.”
Supporters of the Enhanced Games are now arguing: Swiss Olympic is clearly against it, after all, it is affiliated with the IOC.
So: call Matthias Kamber. The Bernese chemist was director of Anti-Doping Switzerland for decades, set up the international doping investigation, but is now very critical of certain developments related to the World Anti-Doping Agency WADA. Hardly anyone knows more about doping than Kamber, who now works as an independent consultant. “The reveal is interesting,” he says of the idea. “You are moving in a similar direction to equestrian sports. You also keep a medication pass and if a test shows a substance that does not match the information, there are consequences.”
ohh so is there a fan? Room laughs. “No. That won’t work!” Why? “I would like to see the doctor who administers a drug to someone to improve their performance. This goes against the deontological code. A reputable doctor will never do that in his life, he should not do that.” For Kamber it is clear: “There is no such thing as clean doping. The pharmaceutical industry does not produce drugs that are explicitly intended to increase performance. The consequences for long-term health cannot be estimated. Anyone who claims otherwise is lying.”
That said, Kamber also laughs at the claim that an unknown athlete could break Bolt’s world record. “I can’t make a racehorse out of a brewery horse. It takes talent, it takes training. Doping can be the icing on the cake that makes you just that little bit faster or stronger. Operation Aderlass showed that these were second-rate athletes who were always got better in their class. But no more.” For the doping expert it is clear: “This is an idea that sounds interesting at first glance. But no more.”
