Whether on the football pitch or at Wembley Stadium – playing football is fun. But football is also a business. Many players are not loyal to their clubs and follow higher salaries. And that disappoints the fans.
That is not only a problem in top football, but also in amateur football. Even in the third division, player salaries and bonuses are common – and an argument for choosing a club. This unbalances the competition and the essence of amateur football. Interest is waning.
Money supplants the beauty of amateur football: the emotions, the surprise that David can always trip the Goliath.
Clubs have a social responsibility. They stimulate sport, bring people together and do a lot for integration. This threatens to collapse when the colleague in the cloakroom becomes a competitor because of the money.
Success in amateur football is not only measured by points won. The values transferred on and off the field cannot be purchased.
This basic rule no longer applies in professional football. It should be kept for amateurs.
