OL-WM in Flims/Laax: Swiss selection in the middle distance final

The middle distance qualification at the OL-WM in Flims/Laax GR is over. And the entire Swiss selection qualified for the final. Joey Hadorn, Matthias Kyburz and Simona Aebersold posted a first exclamation mark at home with a win in their respective heats. Matthias Kyburz, who competed as reigning world champion in the middle distance, showed his class with a strong flight. “In the technically difficult passages I was able to deliberately slow down and at the same time increase the pace where possible,” he says afterwards.

Joey Hadorn also proves that he feels at home in this area. In the same heat, Florian Howald finished fifth with a controlled run. A mistake on post 14 cost Martin Hubmann a few minutes, but in the end he managed to qualify for the final with a 10th place.

Aebersold’s declaration of war

Simona Aebersold is in a class of her own. She removed second-seeded Sara Hagstrom of Sweden with 2:20 minutes. “It was not a perfect run, but there was a good feeling for the further races,” says the reigning European champion. Natalia Gemperle also started the title fight well with a second place.

Sabine Hauswirth and Marion Aebi have to shiver a bit more. They don’t get the best start to the run and worry about making mistakes early in the race. Hauswirth is 9th, Aebi 10th.

The middle distance final will take place on Saturday. On Thursday, the long-distance race is the first medal decision. (mom)
