Disappointment in Gstaad: The last Swiss team also failed early on

Marco Krattiger (right) and Florian Breer lose the round of 16 in Gstaad.

In the round of 16, Marco Krattiger/Florian Breer lost 24:22, 20:22, 8:15. They couldn’t seize the moment. The Thurgau Krattiger and the Basler Breer were the only Swiss duo to qualify for the knockout phase on Friday after falling behind in the set against the Spaniards Herrera/Collado.

There they met the Brazilians Pedro Solberg and Guto, only number 11 on the seeding list – a duo with a similar collar size to the Spaniards the night before. And in the quarterfinals, Krattiger/Breer would not have met a top 8 team again.

But despite all the support of more than 4,000 spectators in the sold-out arena, the Swiss did not succeed. Although they secured the first set after two four-point deficits (8:12 and 9:13) with 24:22, they gambled away a four-point lead (5:1) in the second round and lost the set with 20 :22 .

Swiss teams disappointed

In the decisive set, the Swiss only led after the first rally. It quickly became 6:2 for the Brazilians, and Pedro Solberg and Guto did not allow a swing in this set. After just over an hour, they used the first game ball to make it 15:8.

The fact that the Swiss top tournament for the local teams ends at the very beginning of the penultimate day is a novelty for Gstaad. The Swiss teams certainly disappointed at the home tournament. However, the bearish result is also a result of the new format with only 16 (previously 32) teams in the main event. For example, Anouk Vergé-Dépré and Joana Mäder duel in the group matches with three teams that were in the semi-finals of the Olympic Games two years ago.

The Brazilian conquerors of Krattiger/Breer failed in the quarterfinals at the hands of the American duo Partain/Benesh, who then also clearly triumphed in the semifinals. On Sunday, a duel with the Norwegian Olympic champion Mol/Sörum follows in the final, of whom the Americans surprisingly won in the group stage. (SDA/Mom)
