The interim balance of the wrestling season: the strong king, the young savage, the high flyer

Big emotions at the Big Stucki. Many tears were shed at his farewell party in Lyss.

The strong king

While other wrestlers reduce their workload due to the physical strain, Joel Wicki (26) does the exact opposite. The farmer has amazed this season with incredible consistency. Although challenged from all sides, Sörenberger usually keeps a cool head in the sawdust ring. And still knows how to surprise his opponents with his lightning attacks.

The greatest emotions

So much for the men who don’t cry: at the Seeländisches Schwingfest, some people got teary-eyed during the emotional farewell speech of wrestling legend Christian Stucki. It was no different for the king himself. Even before the first course, Stucki received thunderous applause and a standing ovation. “Then it has already squeezed out the first tears,” said the king. Rarely is a wrestling festival so emotional.

The Young Wilderness

Even before the season, they were among the hottest irons for Blick: Sinisha Lüscher (17) from northeastern Switzerland and Michael Moser (17) from Bern. On the Oberaargau, for example, the Emmental ended the festival in 3c place. Kings Kilian Wenger and Joel Wicki were placed in front and behind him. The Uerkheimer Lüscher was already in a final stage on the Solothurn Cantonal. There he was defeated by ally Nick Alpiger (27), ten years his senior, but Lüscher made a big statement at this festival.

The whiz kid

No one can ignore him this season. No wrestler has managed to get the Bernese dominator Fabian Staudenmann (26) on his back this summer. While the Guggisberger had to settle for eight second places last year, he already celebrated five victories at the Kranzfest this summer. And there is no end to his strong performance.

The excitement

Is wrestling a professional sport or not? The sport, at least as far as the judges are concerned, can clearly be classified as amateur. Due to the now almost national broadcast on TV, the judgments of the jury members have become the center of attention. Numerous controversial decisions have been the subject of discussion this season – such as the far too long duration of the match or Michael Gwerder’s very easy result against Michael Ledermann last Sunday in Central Switzerland.

The great absentee

So far it hasn’t been the season of Thurgau’s exceptional wrestler Samuel Giger (25). After a neck injury in the winter, he did not live up to expectations at the start of the season. When he finally got his old form back with his first Kranzfest win of the season at the Glarner-Bündner Kantonale, the injury struck again: he suffered a torn muscle fiber during training. He had to miss four wrestling festivals, including the Central Swiss and the Stoos-Schwinget. A tough nut to crack awaits his comeback at Rigi-Schwinget: Giger meets King Wicki in first gear.
