Mads Pedersen has won the eighth stage of the Tour de France.

After his three victories in this year’s Tour de France, Jasper Philipsen has to settle for a second place in the 8th stage. The Dane Mads Pedersen triumphs in the sprint just ahead of the Belgian.

On the hilly, 201-kilometre stretch from Libourne to Limoges, the field overtakes the last escapee with more than 8 kilometers to go. A long uphill sprint follows, with Pedersen taking his second Tour de France victory after his first stage win last year.

With Wout van Aert, another Belgian completes the day’s podium. There are no changes at the top of the general classification. The Dane Jonas Vingegaard remains more than 25 seconds ahead of the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar.

Drama about Cavendish

The race also marks the end of the Tour for Mark Cavendish. The Briton, who sprinted just next to the record victory of the Tour de France the day before, falls about 60 kilometers before the finish of the eighth stage and has to end the Tour de France prematurely with a shoulder injury.

The 38-year-old Astana professional, who wants to put an end to his career at the end of the season, took second place in the sprint behind Jasper Philipsen on Friday. That gives him, just like the Belgian legend Eddy Merckx, 34 Tour stage victories.

Before the first rest day there is another spectacle. On Sunday, the legendary Puy de Dôme will be climbed again for the first time in 35 years. (SDA/mab)
