FC Luzern managed to stage a real coup by signing Teddy Okou (25). Numerous clubs were chasing the top scorer of the Challenge League. He chose the FCL. It was surprising to many why the Frenchman did not accept a more financially lucrative offer. For Okou herself, however, this question does not arise at all.
“Yes, I’ve had several good offers and could have earned more. But I am not in Switzerland for financial reasons,” Okou explains in an interview with Blick. The sporting aspect was much more important. “Luzern offers everything to develop me further. It is the logical step in my career.”
In Germany, Okou has only been playing for a year and a half – and he has made a flying start: 22 goals and 10 assists in 48 games for Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy. Earlier, the career of the Parisian did not always go according to plan. This is one of the reasons why he goes to work with a healthy dose of humility.
When you talk to him, you quickly notice that he doesn’t do anything rash. During the entire conversation in the lobby of the Alpenhotel Montafon in Schruns (Austria), where the FCL is currently in the training camp, he sits there quietly, cheerfully explains and laughs in between.
“I know I can climb the career ladder. But I’m still missing some things. I need and want to learn this. Luzern is the perfect club for that,” says Okou. Moreover, he does not consider his task in Switzerland to be completed. “It’s important for me to show that I can play my best football in this country.”
They are completely different words than those used by Joaquin Ardaiz a year ago. The Uruguayan also came to the FCL as the Challenge League’s top scorer. He announced twenty goals and ended up scoring none in the competition. At the moment, he is not even in training camp, but is struggling with a foot injury. At the same time, he keeps fit in the gym of the club, as evidenced by his Instagram account.
However, the signs that Okou will strike are positive. With his dribbling, speed and goal scoring ability, he has the potential to become the crowd favorite at FCL. He is already popular within the team. He has known two teammates for a long time: Sofyan Chader (23) and Nicky Beloko (23). “I spoke to them a lot before my transfer. Now I am very happy to be able to play with them.”
The fact that everyone in the team already expected him and that the fans have high expectations of him is not a problem for Okou: “I don’t feel any particular pressure and I am quite calm. I want to get used to it as soon as possible and prove that FC Luzern’s confidence in me is justified.”
