Heat tips for a cool summer: You’ll sweat less this way

You can reduce the effects of high temperatures with a few tricks.

When the sun really shines from the sky, the temperatures in the workplace also rise sharply, and even at night you can no longer expel the heat from the rooms, you have to start sweating a lot. Fluid balance is easily disturbed and many people suffer from circulatory problems, dizziness is not uncommon.

But this can be avoided. The rule of thumb is: drink a lot of at least 1½ to 2 liters a day. And if possible, avoid the scorching sun or at least take longer breaks in the shade every hour.

1. What should you eat in the heat?

When the heat is sweltering, light foods such as fish, chicken, salad or fruit and water-rich melons are ideal choices. Then the body doesn’t have to work hard to digest. Beware: Many dishes on the typical summer menu, such as tomato-mozzarella salad or vitello tonnato, are supposedly light, but contain a lot of fat!

Very spicy or hot foods should also be avoided as they promote sweating. Cold soups? They’re good, but they’re usually served straight from the fridge and with ice cubes. Gazpacho and Co. is better—at least in terms of flavor—if served at room temperature.

2. How much water do you need to drink?

Drinking a lot is everything on hot days, but that doesn’t mean drinking everything liquid. Soft drinks, no matter how lively, have a lot of calories. The same goes for juices, which you can drink only by diluting them with plenty of water.

It is better to wait with beer until the cooler evening, it is better to leave the wine alone, because alcohol also washes the liquid from the body. The top is water with and without mineral water, and if possible unsweetened tea. Water with a squeeze of lemon juice or mint leaves provides a pleasant freshness.

Otherwise, the same goes for soups: drinks should not be icy.

3. What should you pay attention to about clothing?

Wide, airy dresses made from light, natural fabrics are the most comfortable to wear when the heat is sweating. It is better to leave synthetics in the closet. In it, body vapors develop more intensely, which can cause you and the environment to smell a little.

Again, open shoes or sandals are recommended. You should be able to take off your closed shoes for a while – preferably in the fresh air – two to three times a day. Changing shoes is also an alternative. This prevents the steps from turning into furnaces where bacteria and athlete’s foot thrive.

4. How to withstand the heat in the office?

Even if you are not at the bank counter and there is no air conditioning in the room, you must follow a certain dress code. Finally, there are also business style blouses, shirts, skirts and long pants made of light fabric. If he gets too overwhelmed, splash some water on your face, run your hands and arms under cold water, or apply menthol to your temples and wrists with a stick.

Small mobile fans are also popular. However, it is recommended that you do not leave them running all the time, as the constant breeze can cause eye infection or a cold.

Foot baths or lounging on swollen legs in a waste paper basket also provide relief – but these solutions are only practical if you only have one office or if desk neighbors have permission and no customer contact.

5. Is exercise recommended in the heat?

Sports activities should be postponed not in the evening, but in the early morning when the ozone level is high. Also, the temperatures are bearable early in the day.

6. How can I sleep better in the heat?

Shops closed during the day and raids in the early morning, as well as raids at bedtime, keep homes and apartments naturally cool. But if the reading on the thermometer stays at a record high for almost 24 hours and it gets too hot even under a thin sheet, you’ll have to resort to other means to get a good night’s sleep.

Put your pajamas in the freezer before getting dressed, cool pads like wet towels, and showering with water that tends to be colder than warm will at least stabilize body temperature for falling asleep. If at some point later you wake up in a sweat, you cannot avoid repeating the procedures.

It’s not a disaster that you have to get up. On the contrary: then you have the opportunity to gaze at the starry summer sky, which only truly displays its splendor after midnight.
