Annoyance Track Limits: This was a car race for the circus

The start in Spielberg: Pole-sitter Max Verstappen enters the first corner as the leader.

The Austrian GP (with Max Verstappen on Red Bull-Honda as the logical winner) was a car race for the circus. The white lines in two corners were exceeded more than 50 times (track limits).

And whoever did that five times had to serve a five-second penalty. It hit eight of the 20 drivers: Hamilton, Sainz, Albon, Gasly, Stroll, Magnussen and Sargeant. And Tsunoda got ten seconds extra because he didn’t serve the first penalty very well!

42nd GP win by Verstappen

For Verstappen it was the 42nd victory, the fifth in a row and the fifth here in Spielberg. It was the Bulls’ 19th win in the last 20 races. And Ferrari has now failed to win 20 times in a row.

Last year’s winner Leclerc was only 5.1 seconds behind the Dutchman. And why this mini backlog? Well, Verstappen came back into the pits on the penultimate lap to change tires to take the extra point for the fastest race lap from team-mate Pérez (who finished third ahead of Sainz). Verstappen the omnivores.

Tragedy second part

Apart from Pérez and Ferrari, only Norris in the “new” McLaren-Mercedes (5th) had a chance not to look so bad against Verstappen.

At Alfa-Sauber, the tragedy continued in Styria. After the total crash in the sprint (Zhou 19th, Bottas 20th), some result cosmetics were applied on Sunday with no chance of points: 14th Zhou, 16th Bottas. With only one dropout: Hülkenberg, who had scored three points for Haas-Ferrari in the sprint.

Stroll saved Alfa-Sauber

Fortunately for Alfa-Sauber Stroll was able to push Albon from last place in the points seven laps before the end in the Williams-Mercedes. With nine points, Hinwil remains in 8th place behind Haas (12) and ahead of Williams (7).
