Already in 2017, Dejan Lovren (33) and Luka Modric (37) had to testify before the court in Osijek, Croatia. And now they are being sued by the same court for their statements. According to the judicial authorities, the two lied and made false statements. If convicted, she could face six months to five years in prison.

The two Croatian stars had made their original statements in connection with the corruption proceedings against ex-Dinamo Zagreb magnate Zdravko Mamic (63). In this, the player’s agent was accused of embezzling 15 million euros and tax evasion.

Mamic and his accomplices were sentenced to 6.5 years in prison. Since the Croatian-Bosnian dual national fled to Bosnia a day before the verdict, he has not served his sentence to this day.

The embezzled 15 million euros came from the transfers from Modric to Tottenham in 2008 (for 22.5 million) and from Lovren to Olympique Lyon in 2010 (for 9 million) – the courts have been able to prove that. However, the real star contradicted himself in his statements during the trial and turned a first contract into a subsequent one.

According to Modric’s first version, early before his transfer, he signed an agreement with Mamic, under which half of the transfer fee – 11 million euros – would be paid by the player to the agent. However, in a second version, according to the court documents, the Croatian star said that this agreement only came about after his transfer to London.
