Cash remains popular at wrestling festivals.

The Schwinger people pay cash. This is what the OK of the Central Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festival (ISAF) wants. In times when cash loses importance, they put the crown on it. “Comparisons with other wrestling festivals showed that people still often pay with cash,” says press officer Hans Schnider. The traditional sport of wrestling keeps the tradition of cash alive.

There are also financial interests behind the decision. More than 10,000 people are expected in Dagmarsellen LU on Sunday. Offering only one payment method takes less effort. Add to that the fees for credit and debit cards. “These are too high,” complains Schnider.

This statement does not surprise Severin Pfluger of the Electronic Payments Association. “Once they do an event, they often end up with a worthless contract. The OR gets the bad conditions from a small dealer.”

An ATM on the fairgrounds

Pfluger doubts that the OC’s calculations will succeed. “Cash also causes costs. There will probably be some 100,000 francs in circulation on the festival grounds, which must be protected, transported and paid for. Depending on the personnel effort, the card variant would be cheaper.”

There is an ATM on the festival site to guarantee the flow of money. No extra costs for the OR. “The effort required to install the ATM is part of the Luzerner Kantonalbank’s sponsorship,” says Schnider. There are two ATMs in Dagmarsellen for emergencies.

According to Schnider, initial feedback on the decision has been positive. Will it sound the same after the festival?
