Lucky Swiss: Good fate for Bencic and Co. at Wimbledon

class=”sc-29f61514-0 jbwksb”>

How far can Belinda Bencic look ahead at Wimbledon? The draw with the English Katie Swan in the 1st round is in any case not too bad.

Belinda Bencic receives a solvable assignment at the start of the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon. The East Swiss, placed as number 14, will meet the English Katie Swan (WTA 146) in the first round, who will benefit from a wildcard. The first seeded opponent in the 3rd round would be Magda Linette, the tournament’s No. 23 seed. The Pole will meet the Swiss Jil Teichmann (WTA 129) in the starting round.

The 18-year-old qualifier Céline Naef (WTA 165) has to deal with the strong, number 22 placed Russian Anastasia Potapova. Simona Waltert (WTA 115) from Graubünden also had a regular opponent with number 32, the Czech Marie Bouzkova. Viktorija Golubic (WTA 138), who meets the Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (WTA 76), was more fortunate.

Good fate for Swiss men

The Swiss men can be satisfied with the draw. Dominic Stricker (ATP 117) will meet Australian Alexei Popyrin (ATP 92) in the first round on his debut at Wimbledon, because he is a good server. In the event of a win, Frances Tiafoe, seeded No. 10, could wait.

Stan Wawrinka (ATP 87) will face Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori (ATP 45) in the only Grand Slam tournament he has never won. In the 2nd round there would be a duel with a sand specialist, the number 29 placed Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry or the Spaniard Bernabé Zapata Miralles (ATP 50), in the 3rd round top favorite Novak Djokovic could be the opponent.

“Important step in the right direction”

Marc-Andrea Hüsler (ATP 83) has a good chance to survive a round against Japanese lucky loser Yosuke Watanuki (ATP 115) for the first time in a major tournament. In the second round, the opponent could be Alexander Zverev.

Alessandro Greco, Head of Elite Sports at Swiss Tennis, is also pleased that Switzerland is represented in the main draw with eight professionals. He is particularly “proud” that four exponents, Naef, Waltert, Golubic and Stricker, who were trained in Biel, passed the qualifications.

Greco: «We are very grateful that the hard work of athletes, families and sponsors is paying off. Only reaching the first main round is of course not what we want to achieve, but it is an important step in the right direction. »

Djokovic meets Argentines

As last year’s winner, Djokovic traditionally opens the tournament on Monday afternoon on Center Court, the Serbian will play against the Argentinian Pedro Cachin. Djokovic’s toughest challenger Carlos Alcaraz will meet Frenchman Jérémy Chardy on Tuesday.

It is also clear that Wawrinka, Bencic, Teichmann and Waltert will start the tournament on Monday and the rest of the Swiss on Tuesday. (SDA/mpe)
