The American owners of the English Premier League club Chelsea are taking over the next traditional European football club. The BlueCo consortium with Chelsea boss Todd Boehly (49) and Swiss entrepreneur Hansjörg Wyss (87) will become the major shareholder of the French first division team Strasbourg. An exact amount of the investment was not mentioned, but according to media reports, BlueCo has acquired almost all of the shares.
However, the takeover is not well received by fans of Alsace. They immediately take to the streets with banners raised expressing their displeasure: “Boehly, not welcome”.
After Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse and promoted Le Havre, Strasbourg is the fifth French first division club with American owners. More than half of the teams in Ligue 1 are now owned by foreign investors. (SDA)
