Servette started the 2023/24 season on Wednesday with his new coach René Weiler. A day later, the 49-year-old appeared in front of the media for the first time.
Weiler, who himself played for Servette between 1994 and 1996, comes to a city and a club he knows well. “It was a different time then, but I always loved the club,” he recalled. “I’ve been a Servette fan since I was a kid and I know the club’s DNA.” The SFC has been through many stories and upheavals, but according to Weiler, the club has been back for five years.
The Zurich man has been keeping a close eye on the Grenats lately, even before his commitment was announced in March. “The development of Servette in recent years has been extraordinary.” René Weiler was also active in the run-up to his arrival: «I followed the team and the market. Like all coaches, I look for players who are interesting for the budget we have.”
Weiler is now ready for the next step. “Now we have to achieve new goals, and I am part of that.” Still, the new coach Servette does not want to bring about a revolution. The Geneva staff will remain virtually unchanged, Weiler will only bring along his assistant Manuel Klökler.
How does Hamlet want to play? “I want to score goals and create actions in front of the opponent’s goal. I want to entertain the crowd by winning games.” Tactically, he will rely on a back four defensively. “People talk too much about systems, but for me it’s more about adapting to the respective players and their qualities,” he explains Weiler wants to give each of his players the opportunity to improve individually.
Youth work is also important for the new trainer. “If you don’t have a lot of money, you have to work with the guys. Servette has very good talents. I want to help them take the next steps and integrate on a professional level.” There are clear performance principles: “If a player is 16 years old but is better than an older player, then he will play.”
Weiler and his team are expecting the first endurance test in Belgium. They want to qualify for the second round of the Champions League qualification against KRC Genk. An opponent that Rene Weiler knows well. From 2016 to 2017 he coached Anderlecht. His track record speaks for itself: in two competitive matches he managed to beat Genk twice.
Nevertheless, he warns for the club from the province of Limburg: “They have a very good team, good young people. You will be hard to beat. But everything is possible in football.” The goal is to qualify.
Recent signings Bradley Mazikou, Joel Mall and Alexander Lyng are expected to help. “We are convinced that these players will bring us something, maybe now, maybe later,” Weiler said of his transfers.
A month before the start of the season, Weiler is far from closing the door to more newcomers. “We need a slightly wider selection to be able to play every three days. The team is not yet complete,” said the former Servette player about the selection planning.
We need a right back in particular. And the arrival of the Geneva striker Jérémy Guillemenot from St. Gallen, who was trained at the club in his younger years, could be announced soon, according to information from Blick.
