More than 40 billionaires live in Switzerland. “Forbes” magazine has named the richest Swiss people of 2023 in a new list. What is striking: inheritance pays significantly more than work.

Markus Blocher

Markus Blocher (52) is one of four children of Senior Vice President politician Christoph Blocher (82). His fortune is estimated at $3.4 billion. He inherited the shares in Ems-Chemie from his father and later sold it. He currently runs the company Dottikon, a spin-off of Ems.

Margarita Louis Dreyfus and her family

Margarita Louis-Dreyfus (60) owns 69.6 percent of agricultural commodity giant Louis-Dreyfus. His fortune is said to be $3.5 billion. She left her shares in the company to her when her husband died of leukemia in 2009. Born in Russia, she managed to increase her legacy and establish herself as a well-known entrepreneur.

Peter Spuhler

Peter Spuhler (63) should not be missing from the list of Switzerland’s richest people. He is Chairman of Stadler Rail and as of this week owns more than 20% of Lucerne industrial giant Swiss Steel. Spuhler is said to be worth $4.1 billion.

Rudolph Mag

Rudolf Maag (77) is said to belong to 4.9 billion – hardly anyone knows about Switzerland. He started his career at Sandoz and also worked for dental giant Straumann. In 1999, it merged Stratec with medical device manufacturer Synthes – later selling 15 percent of it to Johnson & Johnson.

Thomas Straumann

Speaking of Straumann: Former CEO and Chairman of the Board, Thomas Straumann (59) is also one of the wealthiest in Switzerland. His fortune is estimated at 5 billion. He also founded Medartis in 1997, of which he is still Vice President today.

Martin Haefner

The assets of the main shareholder Martin Haefner (69) are also estimated at $5 billion. He currently owns 32.7% of Swiss Steel’s shares. But Haefner also inherited from his father, who died at the age of 101 as the world’s oldest billionaire. Haefner took over the shares of CA Technologies and AMAG.

Dona Bertarelli

In 2013, Dona Bertarelli’s (55) family sold biotech company Serono for over $13 billion. She heads the Bertarelli Foundation, which works with her brother to protect the oceans. She is also the fastest woman to circumnavigate the world.

Hansjoerg Wyss

Hansjörg Wyss (88) founded the medical device manufacturer Synthes. In 2012, he sold the company to Johnson & Johnson for $20.2 billion. It is worth $5.1 billion and currently holds shares in Novo Cure and Molecular Partners. They also have foundations.

Michael Pieper (77) is the CEO and sole owner of Artemis Group. It controls the Franke Group, a manufacturer of kitchen sinks and other industrial kitchen appliances. His fortune is estimated at $5.4 billion.

Thomas Schmidheiny’s (77) great-uncle founded the cement company now known as Lafarge Holcim in 1912. In 1984, Schmidheiny inherited Holcim from his father. His fortune is 5.7 billion.

Checkout.com, the company of Guillaume Pousaz (41) was valued at $40 billion in 2022. While fintech valuations plummeted, that valuation was swiftly reduced to 11 billion. Checkout.com aims to solve problems with online payment transactions and has brought Pousaz a fortune of 7.2 billion.
