The career of Breel Embolo (26) has come to a standstill again. The striker missed all four European Championship qualifiers with the national team in the first half of the year. In March he suffered a knee injury, for the games in Andorra (2-1) and against Romania (2-2) he again gave Nati coach Murat Yakin a basket for health reasons. Reason for injury: unknown. He is hardly missed in these matches, which is less due to Embolo than to Zeki Amdouni, this spring’s Swiss shooting star.

Last autumn things went well for Embolo, who made his debut in the national team in the spring of 2015 at the age of 18. The Basel-born Cameroonian became a crowd favorite at an early age, with the fans dedicating their own song to the powerhouse with the beaming smile and the villains at the 2016 European Championships in France to the tune of “The lions sleep nights”. The fans also sing the song in Lucerne on Monday, although the 63-time international against Romania is not there.

Night excursion overshadows the Gladbach chapter

Last summer, Embolo left the Gladbach chapter behind, where he scored 25 goals in 106 games in three years. However, his time on the Lower Rhine was overshadowed by a night excursion when he was arrested by the police during the Corona period. According to these, he would have been part of a party community and fled over the roof. Embolo claims he watched basketball at a friend’s house next to the party. The club fined him, and the municipality of Essen also fined him – albeit much lower (8400 euros) – for violating the Corona rules.

Dream start on the Côte d’Azur, strong World Cup

Embolo then blooms on the Côte d’Azur. The newcomer (transfer fee 12.5 million euros) hits the club from the principality with full force. He is a regular player and has scored seven goals in 15 preliminary round league games. He therefore travels to the World Cup in Qatar full of confidence. In the Nati storm he is the clear number 1, Yakin has complete confidence in him – and rightly so. Embolo plays an important role in Switzerland and reaches the eighth finals despite a difficult group. In the opening game against his native Cameroon, he became the match winner with his goal and in the 3-2 win in the decisive preliminary round against Serbia, he scored 2-2.

After returning from Qatar, Embolo is once again making headlines off the field, but not through any fault of his own. Just before Christmas, he is shot in his Lamborghini SUV Urus. Photos of the demolished black and yellow PS monster (more than 800!) are doing the rounds on social media. Sportingly, he continues his good form and scores five goals in five games. After that, however, he finally loses his regular place before knee problems put him out of action for almost two months. Embolo is back in the closing stages of the season, but he cannot stop the club’s negative trend. In the end, after a long flirtation with participation in the Champions League, Monaco even missed out on the European places. Now club and players dare to start again with a new coach – including Embolo.
