Doctors from the Virgen del Rocio hospital in Seville confirm to the Spanish television channel that the PSG goalkeeper’s artificial coma has been lifted: “Sergio Rico has opened his eyes and is conscious.” Rico has “already recognized his relatives and even communicated with gestures”.

But Rico can’t talk yet. The vocal cords were still too damaged by the three weeks of intubation.

Rico’s wife Alba Silva said: “I knew from the start that he would make it because he is a champion. Thank you to the hospital and the health workers who are behaving incredibly not only to Sergio but to all patients.”

Riding accident at the end of May

The doctors took the Spaniard out of the coma two weeks ago, but decided to induce another artificial coma after two days because his condition had not improved.

Sergio Rico had a riding accident in southern Spain at the end of May. This resulted in a collision with another horse, Rico fell to the ground and was hit on the head by a hoof. He had a cerebral hemorrhage.
