Comments on the draw against Romania: A minor setback, nothing more

Well, they haven’t practiced understatement, our national cracks. Not after the draw, when captain Granit Xhaka revealed his aim was to win all ten games. That’s not arrogant, that’s the truth. Switzerland is favourite.

And then comes coach Murat Yakin, also no friend of false modesty, and says in best English to the astonished Romanian journalists: “Of course we are the favorite in this game.” Of course you are a favorite.

If your mouth gets a bit fuller, there are risks. Because if you don’t follow the proper execution afterwards, you will be brutally slapped in the face. So the ordinary Swiss prefer to leave it that way. Does that also explain in a very simple way why Xhaka is not Swiss? At least not “typical”?

Four games, three wins, one draw. Despite the minor setback against Romania, Switzerland remains on course for the European Championship.
And the spicy words? A colleague of mine from Einsiedeln SZ, deep in Central Switzerland, God knows a sober man, said after Xhaka and Yakin’s statements: «That’s right! Nice clear messages.

Xhaka is more quintessentially Swiss than he thinks.
