After the victory in Zagreb, the Swiss lightweight double sculls also wins the second World Cup competition of the season with Raphaël Ahumada and Jan Schäuble. Andrin Gulich/Roman Röösli in a pair without taking second place in Varese.

In the semi-finals on Saturday, Ahumada/Schäuble were defeated by the French Ferdinand Ludwig/Hugo Beurey for the first time this season. The reactions in the final on Sunday were impressive. Still in 4th place after 500m, the 22-year-old from Vaud and the 23-year-old from Nidwalden took the lead in the second quarter of the course and never relinquished it. The European champions were 1.32 seconds ahead of Ludwig/Beurey.

The duo Gulich/Röösli, newly formed for this season, conceded their first defeat after winning in Zagreb and clinching the European championship title in Bled. The 24-year-old from Zurich and the five-year-old from Lucerne had no chance against the rowing British Thomas George/Oliver Wynne-Griffith, who finished third at the World Cup last year. Australian Joseph O’Brien/Angus Dawson kept Gulich/Röösli at bay thanks to a strong finish.

The ladies quad scull consisting of Célia Dupré, Pascale Walker, Lisa Lötscher and Fabienne Schweizer fought a gripping duel with the German boat for third place, in which the Swiss team lost by 13 hundredths. The men’s quad sculls with Maurin Lange, Nils Schneider, Jonah Plock and Dominic Condrau also finished fourth, but the top 3 was out of reach.

The Swiss team leaves Varese with three podium finishes. Andri Struzina was second in the non-Olympic lightweight single scull on Saturday. The last World Cup station is Lucerne. From 7 to 9 July there will be rowing on the Rotsee. (SDA)
