A 26-year-old Swiss man died from serious injuries he sustained while falling down a precipice

Swiss cyclist Gino Mader (Bahrain Victorious) died this morning as a result of severe injuries he suffered in the Tour of Switzerland stage last Thursday, in fall down the gorge, as announced by his team. Bahrain announced the loss “with deep sadness and a heavy heart” adding that the team was “devastated” and that their “thoughts and prayers are with Gino’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

After the crash on the final descent of the stage on Thursday, the 26-year-old rider was revived by medical staff at the scene, before being airlifted to hospital. “Despite the best efforts of the phenomenal staff at Chur Hospital, Gino was unable to overcome this, his last and greatest challenge, and at 11:30 we said goodbye to one of the shining lights of our team,” the Bahraini team reported.

“We are devastated by the loss of Gino Madero. His talent, dedication and enthusiasm were an inspiration to us all. He was not only an extremely talented rider, but also a great person off the bike. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time,” said CEO Milan Erzen.

“Bahrain Victorious will run in his honour, keeping his memory alive on all the roads we run on. We are determined to show the spirit and passion that Gino showed, and he will always remain an integral part of our team.” “Today and every day we will run for you, Gino,” concludes the message of the Bahraini team.

Mader’s fatal accident occurred at the last port of the main stage of the Tour of Switzerland, which ended in Le Punto, during the dangerous descent of Albulapass. A Swiss cyclist fell down a precipice and remained unconscious on the water.

“A high finish could have been perfectly possible, it was not a good decision to make us finish after a dangerous descent. As cyclists, we have to think about the risks we take when going down the mountains”, commented the Belgian Remco Evenepoel, at the end of the stage on Thursday.

Gino Mader won two stages of the Tour of the Future, one at the Giro d’Italia, one at the Tour of Switzerland and the youth classification at the Tour of Spain 2021.
