Selfless tanner let the king win: Stucki owes his happy ending to him

After 14 lost duels, Gerber finally gets to knock the sawdust off the king’s back in the 15th.

The Zeeland wrestling festival on Sunday was not only a highly emotional affair for Christian Stucki (38). Christian Gerber (32) will also not soon forget this day. De Zeeland was Gerber’s very last chance to turn the tables a bit. He seizes this opportunity: “I waved Stucki fifteen times, I was able to win once,” said the Emmentaler with a laugh after the fourth course. “And for that I made the whole arena hate me today,” adds the meat specialist with a good dose of humor.

He’s not entirely wrong. Whoever gets to meet with “Chrigu” on Sunday has a rather thankless job. At the beginning of the afternoon, Christian Gerber doesn’t find it that difficult: “At least it wasn’t Stucki’s very last course.” For it is a struggling honor to let the outgoing win in the final gear of his career. This is especially true if, for example, you both already have the wreath for sure and it’s not much left.

The damn wrestling honor

For Gerber, the world seems difficult at the moment. He has achieved his goal of putting Stucki on his back at least once in his career. He will be the last wrestler to do this. And Stucki certainly does not blame him: “We are always happy when we see each other. We also call each other Chrigi, because we are both so small and thin,” says the Emmentaler mischievously.

But the laughter only ebbs away from the Swiss a little later, when it becomes clear that he will have to compete against the legend Christian Stucki again in the last round. “Now I’m in the right place! What should I do now?” Gerber is in a bind. Because although the Emmentaler has already won 60 wreaths, he is still waiting for his first festival victory. That would be the chance. But what about the aforementioned wrestling lore? Gerber’s problem: It’s not about nothing, but about winning the Zeeland.

“Hey, Take Me”

The last passage between the two “Chrigis” drags on. A posed would be the worst case scenario. The victory would be inherited by Adrian Walther (21) and Matthieu Burger (21). No glorious finish for Stucki, no first win for Gerber – Burger would triumph for the first time. But then, 30 seconds before the end, Gerber suddenly found himself with his back in the sawdust. The arena rages. After a warm embrace with the king, he withdraws from the hype.

The Emmentaler made his decision. “It was clear to me that being asked wouldn’t be good for either of us. So I said to Chrigu at the last minute, So, huh, take me.” And what does Stucki say about this selfless action by his opponent? “Thank you. Thank you Chigu.”
