“High levels of violence and gore, explicit nudity, rape, profanity and sexual content”: it’s no wonder “The countgot an R rating, ie the MPA (Motion Picture Association), which is responsible for the US age ratings, was only released from the age of 17. But behind it there is indeed a brutal horror film, such as the normally very serious site specialized in horror themes supposed? Even if the title and age rating promise: no.
This is “The Count” aka “El Conde”
Rather, it’s probably “The Count” with a very high degree of probability for the English title of “El Conde‘ (both titles mean ‘De Graaf’), the Chilean director’s new film Pablo Larrain. Filming on “El Conde” began almost a year ago, in June 2022, so it’s very fitting that the movie was only rated R by the MPA.
This means that ‘The Count’ is still in US theaters and will be released on Netflix in 2023 – with an acclaimed director like Larraín (‘Jackie’, ‘Spencer’), who has won multiple film awards, the streaming service probably hopes that “El Conde” to get involved in the upcoming Oscar season. The theme of the movie is also apt:
“The Count” is not about Count Dracula, but about the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochetwho came to power in a military coup in 1973 and ruled until 1990. Thousands of murders, torture and other human rights violations took place in Chile under the regime he led. In “El Conde” Pinochet will be seen as a 250 year old vampire (!).who no longer wants to live because of shame and family strife – so the vampire title is no coincidence.
The next Netflix scandal movie after “Blonde”?
That sounds fascinating and we’re really excited about “El Conde” just because of Larraín’s fantastic filmography (his recent films have all been awarded at least 4 out of 5 stars by the FILMSTARTS editors!). However, we would too don’t be surprised if “The Count” becomes the next Netflix scandal movie – similar to the one released in 2022″.Blond“ (who also caused a stir beforehand because of his age rating).
While there was an Oscar nomination for lead actress Ana de Armas and an excellent 4.5 out of 5 stars from FILMSTARTS for Andrew Dominik’s Marilyn Monroe fantasy, the film was also highly controversial, panned at times and won two Golden Raspberries (the anti-Oscars) “awarded”.
It could be similar to “El Conde”, After all, Pablo Larraín mixes actual crimes (hence the MPA-certified depiction of violence) with lots of sex and fantastic horror elements and then stages the whole thing as a black comedy., Netflix announced in 2022 in a press release on the occasion of the start of the recordings. So we are already committed: “The Count” will surely divide its audience …
