Inter Miami goalkeeper Nick Marsman is not a fan of the Messi transfer.

It’s the big transfer coup for Inter Miami and the whole of MLS. Superstar Lionel Messi (35) is moving to the States and is already causing a huge hype. But is the club, founded only in 2018, ready for the arrival of one of the greatest footballers of all time?

If Miami goaltender Nick Marsman has his way, he isn’t. The 32-year-old Dutchman expressed his concerns in an interview with ESPN: “We play in a transitional stadium, the fans can just walk onto the field and there are no barriers.” The lack of security also makes Marsman think: “We leave the stadium without security guards. In my opinion, the club is not ready for Messi.”

Debut scheduled for late July

Inter Miami currently play their home games at the Drive Pink Stadium. The stadium can accommodate 18,000 spectators and is only used as an interim solution. The move to the new Miami Freedom Park is scheduled for 2025. The state-of-the-art stadium has to accommodate 25,000 fans and is currently under construction.

However, those responsible in Miami still have some time to adjust the security concept. The debut of the Argentine superstar is scheduled for July 22. Then Inter Miami will meet Mexican club Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup.

Follower growth and tickets at exorbitant prices

Still, the Messi hype is already palpable. The club’s Instagram account has gained more than seven million new followers since the deal was announced and has more subscribers than any other club in MLS.

And the Messi effect can also be seen in ticket sales. Nearly 24 hours after the transfer was announced, all of Inter Miami’s remaining home and away matches were sold out. On resale platforms, the tickets are now selling for up to $3,500. (byl)
