where to start Novak Djokovic’s marks in men’s tennis are unparalleled. On Sunday evening, he became the oldest Roland Garros winner ever at 36 years and 20 days. Thanks to his 23rd Grand Slam title, he is now the sole owner of this record. He was and is – new again since Monday – the longest number one in the world on the ATP ranking: with no less than 388 weeks. And the final in Paris against Casper Ruud (7: 6, 6: 3, 7: 5) was his 34th at Grand Slam level. Yes, that’s a record too.
“Where does that end?” asks his coach Goran Ivanisevic (51) afterwards. The Croat is part of the Djokovic entourage, who had to go through the valley before the last coup at the Porte d’Auteuil, as Ivanisevic laughs afterwards: “He tormented us, almost tore us, we had no fingernails left. There is many more, but I cannot tell you. But we are still alive. I am an old man, I must take care of my heart.”
Djokovic has “this software in his head” that he can turn on at Grand Slam tournaments: “It’s fascinating. You think, ‘Okay, now he’s 23’. But he’ll find the motivation somewhere to be number 24 or 25. to win.”
In terms of Grand Slam titles, the only Serb still ahead of the sun is Margaret Court (80), who won 24 majors. This and two other perpetual stamps should be incentive enough to try and further embellish his already richly decorated career.
Djokovic will start as the defending champion at Wimbledon in three weeks. If he gets the trophy, it would be another step towards the Grand Slam on the calendar. Since Rod Laver in 1969, no one has managed to win all four major tournaments in one year. In 2021, Djokovic failed after his triumphs in Melbourne, Paris and Wimbledon at the US Open (with the final defeat to Daniil Medvedev, 27).
Incentive number two: With another Wimbledon win, Djokovic would have been among their eight – and would have tied Roger Federer’s (41) legendary record on the hallowed lawn. It was to be a truly prestigious success on the most prestigious of all major leagues.
Djokovic was finally able to gild his tennis career next year in the same place where he now set his 23rd record. The Olympic Games will take place in Paris in 2024. Bronze from 2008 (Beijing) is already in his possession. But he still lacks an Olympic victory on his gigantic list of achievements.
