Switzerland votes on October 22. A year earlier, leaders of all parties in Blick pledged that the next election would be women’s. Today, the share of female politicians in the National Council is 42 percent and in the Council of States 26 percent.

The project “Helvetia is calling!”, which is supported by women from different parties. persuaded the party leaders to take bets. Bets intended to ensure that Swiss politics becomes even more feminine.

A few months before the election, “Helvetia is calling!” a first interim report. Numerous cantons have now nominated their candidates. The bourgeois parties in particular must accelerate so that the goal “Helvetia rufe!” can be achieved by a parliament that is half-governed by women.

FDP has room for improvement

FDP leader Thierry Burkart (47) has to hurry not to lose his bet. He informed the women’s chairperson of the FDP, Susanne Vincenz-Stauffacher (56), that he would succeed in increasing the proportion of women in the liberal parliamentary group to 40 percent. A challenge: today the share of women is only 29 percent. For the FDP to do this, a woman would have to be elected in five cantons instead of the previous male incumbent – or countless seats with women would have to be won.

From the current point of view, the current list design is probably not sufficient for this. Particularly in larger cantons such as Zurich, Lucerne or Aargau, the proportion of women running for the FDP is less than 40 percent.

Center is on track

Center chairman Gerhard Pfister (60) also promised more candidates. And what’s more: half of the best – so top – list positions should be occupied by women. This means that women have the best chance of getting elected, and even if it still doesn’t work out, they would be in pole position to slide down when they step down. The goal was reached in 16 cantons, but not in four.

SVP with a modest goal

SVP President Marco Chiesa (48) bet SVP National Councilors Céline Amaudruz (44) and Diana Gutjahr (39) that the SVP will have more candidates across Switzerland than in 2019. It’s not particularly difficult – the last election was just one times 22 percent of all SVP candidates are female. After 19 cantons have already made their SVP lists, the share of women is 26 percent. “Helvetia Ruft!” is very satisfied. Nope. For example, the strongest party in Zug competes with a male-only list.

SP has no problem promoting women

SP co-chair Mattea Meyer (34) bet that, as before, half of the list places would be given to women. The SP lists are already available in 20 cantons, so the goal has been achieved. Of the 220 SP nominees for the Bundestag building, 55 percent are currently women. In the canton of Neuchâtel, for example, only women walk next to the former Baptiste Hurni (37).

Greens, EVP and GLP have an almost equal ratio

Green boss Balthasar Glättli (51) and GLP president Jürg Grossen (53) promise their respective gambling partners Maya Graf (61) and Kathrin Bertschy (43) that green and green-liberal politics in the Federal Palace will be at least 50 percent female. The ambition is modest, because the Greens already have more than 60 percent women in the National Council and the Council of States. The current share of women among the nominees is again above 50 percent this year.

With the GLP it is different: of the 169 people who want to go to the Federal Palace for the Green Liberals, only 48 percent are currently women. The party could not find an interested woman in Schaffhausen.

And EVP chairman Lilian Studer (45), whose party is politicizing in the middle group, wants to compete with at least 40 percent women, she bet. She will probably win the bet. The share of women on the EVP lists already nominated is now 53 percent.
