Afraid of the shooters: The Swiss Federal Audit Office (SFAO) pinpoints savings potential in off-duty shooting. She advised the federal government last year to focus on modern projectiles when it comes to subsidies for ammunition for target practice and events.
The federal government subsidizes ammunition for shooters to improve off-duty shooting, marksmanship, and will-to-defense to bolster the local militia army—for example, with “mandatory” shooting.
According to the SFAO, ammunition subsidies for about 2,500 shooting clubs amounted to CHF 10.2 million in 2019 and CHF 7.9 million in 2020.
Based on the advice of the SFAO, the federal government has now decided to reduce the funding contributions for the so-called rifle cartridge 11 (GP11) from 2024. Introduced in 1911, this ammunition fires carbines or the 57 assault rifles, which were retired by the military in 2014. The army itself only uses the cartridges for machine guns, but not in large quantities.
In the future, the GP11 will receive a similar subsidy to the more modern rifle cartridge 90 (GP90), which is used for the assault rifle 90. Specifically, a shot of GP11 from next year will cost 60 centimes instead of the previous 30. Double that!
The Swiss Shooting Sports Association (SSV) was able to negotiate that in return contributions for “compulsory” shooting, field shooting or youth shooting courses would be increased.
Nevertheless, the Bernese SVP State Councilor Werner Salzmann (60) does not like the increase in the price of ammunition – that is why he is now shooting back. In a motion, he calls on the Bundesrat not to increase the price for GP11 ammunition.
Salzmann fears that the price increase will lead to a decrease in shooting activities and shooters in the clubs. It is certainly not in the interests of the army and the country to weaken the will to defend with such measures. (Okay)
