The judgment of the people is devastating. A Swiss Touring Club (TCS) survey at the beginning of the year concluded that two-thirds of the population and nine out of ten cities rejected a general speed limit of 30. Yet the traffic controllers of the city demand just that.
In Zurich, only 29 percent of respondents are in favor of 30 km/h, while 71 percent are against. “Don’t know” does not appear in the survey. Only in Lugano is there a narrow majority for a general speed reduction.
Proponents of the 30 km/h limit argue that the results of the survey do not match the experiences of the cities. The feedback you get from inner city residents is different. They are clearly for speed reductions.
But outside the centers the situation is different. People in the suburbs are happy that 30 km/h applies in their own living environment and that the children can go to school safely, it is said in the cities. “Of course many car commuters want to get to work as quickly as possible.” Reportedly, attention for the residents of the center, who are much more affected by traffic, is not always the first priority.
In fact, the TCS survey shows that while people generally don’t want a 30 km/h speed limit, they do want it in certain areas: in Basel, 59 percent of respondents would like more 30-speed zones, in Bern, 58 percent are in favor of more such zones, and in Lucerne it is exactly that Half of the respondents want more 30 zones. 38 percent want less of it and for 8 percent the current status is just right.
In St. Gallen, where 79 percent of the population is against a general speed limit of 30, 65 percent want more 30-speed zones. The TCS research is not so black and white.
The tour club explains that it commissioned the survey to gauge how the city population thinks about the national introduction of 30 km/h. “It is an objective, independent and representative survey”, conducted by opinion research institute Link.
The questions are identical to those in the 2021 survey. This way the results can be compared. They were similar.
One thing is certain for the TCS: “A clear majority of the population generally does not want 30 km/h in cities and agglomerations.” The fact that some city governments are trying to push 30 km/h across the board against the will of the majority of their population is “problematic”.
