The city of Bern donates three tank firefighting vehicles to Ukraine. A delegation from Ukraine received the vehicles on Tuesday. The city made the donation as a show of solidarity and helpfulness to the country under attack by Russia.
The three fire engines have already been replaced by newer models, the municipality announced. The safety director of the city of Bern, Reto Nause (51, center), explained that the donation should help to alleviate the suffering – and support the rescuers on site in firefighting and civilian rescues.
The vehicles were handed over in the presence of the Ukrainian ambassador Iryna Venediktova (44). She expressed her gratitude, according to the city’s announcement. “Every donation is vital to us and saves someone’s life,” she said.
The fire trucks are destined for Brody, a town in western Ukraine, about 100 kilometers from the Polish border. Members of the delegation will drive them to their destination via Germany on Wednesday. The Cantonal Fire Inspectorate of Bern’s Construction Insurance made contact with Brody.
The three vehicles, a Mercedes-Benz from 1990 and two MAN vehicles from 2004 and 2013, were replaced last year by new tank fire trucks due to changed requirements.
The fire and rescue equipment on the vehicles has been specially adapted to the needs in Ukraine. The new tank firefighting vehicles of the city of Bern are smaller, more manoeuvrable and require fewer large water tanks due to the many fire hydrants in Bern. (SDA)
