Is the baby a girl or a boy? Switzerland’s official papers recognize these two gender variants. Non-binary individuals who cannot or will not clearly attribute themselves to one of these two genders must take sides due to the legal situation.

Many countries around the world no longer consider this attitude to be up-to-date and have introduced a third gender on official papers such as passports. For the Swiss Federal Council, on the other hand, all this is too modern. He announced last year that Switzerland was not ready yet. It first requires a social discourse, as stated in the Federal Council’s statement at the time.

But for some politicians, the Bundesrat’s position is too old-fashioned. The National Councilors of the Legal Commission listened to experts and stakeholders in April. As the “NZZ am Sonntag” reports, they then spoke out in favor of an initiative calling on the Federal Council to show how the situation of non-binary people can be improved – without necessarily legally abandoning the binary gender model.

Now there is a demand for Parliament

Various measures are proposed, which should be examined for their advantages and disadvantages. For example, the “legal framework for identity cards and other documents” could be adapted. Or a way must be found to make changing the first name easier.

The Green National Councilor Sibel Arslan (42) drafted the initiative. She told the “NZZ am Sonntag”: “I want non-binary people to be visible in our society. It has to do with respect and recognition.”

Subsequently, the National Council decides on the initiative.
