Price attack from Germany: Volkswagen wants to offer an electric car “in the price range of around 20,000 euros”. “I think this is a valuable consideration and a sensible target for the VW brand,” said Oliver Blume (54), CEO of Bild am Sonntag.
For Volkswagen, this will be the “next but one step”. In mid-March, VW had already announced the ID.2all electric compact car, which should cost less than 25,000 euros. The two-door should have a range of 450 kilometers and front-wheel drive. At the time, VW also announced that the manufacturer is working on an electric car under 20,000 euros “despite all the difficulties”.
According to Blumes, VW should be “the strongest international automaker” in the key Chinese market. A quarter of all cars sold in China in 2022 were electric vehicles. VW expects this share to increase to 50 percent in the next 2-3 years.
On the question of Chinese competition, Blume said that the Chinese have learned a lot over the past few decades and exhibited a tremendous pace of innovation. “They use e-cars for short distances and in big megacities,” said the VW boss.
In rural areas, VW cars with hybrid or internal combustion engines “continue to be very successful”. The Volkswagen brand “has great appeal”.
VW’s sales in China fell 14.5 percent in the first quarter of this year. The People’s Republic is the most important market for VW. Blume said VW is still the market leader for combustion models out there. “We want to transfer our power to electric vehicles.”
Romanian manufacturer Dacia is already offering a small electric car in Europe for around 20,000 euros. According to the company, the Dacia Spring has a range of up to 230 kilometers. Dacia is a subsidiary of Renault. Renault wants to launch an electric small car in the ID.2all price range in 2024. Opel parent company Stellantis has similar plans.
Especially when it comes to small cars, the total cost of an electric vehicle is currently much higher than that of a conventional internal combustion engine. As ADAC recently announced, small cars are now almost twice as expensive as the combustion model. (SDA/koh)
