Armin Hartmann (SVP) will join the government of Lucerne in the future.

Voters in Lucerne decided on Sunday who will be awarded the two remaining government seats. The SP is about to return to the Lucerne government after an eight-year absence, and the SVP can easily defend its current seat.

The entrepreneur Armin Hartmann (45) of the SVP has been elected in the second round to succeed the outgoing SVP government councilor Paul Winiker. He could count on the support of the FDP and Mitte.

They had already defended their executive mandate with Fabian Peter (FDP/formerly), Reto Wyss (center/formerly) and Michaela Tschuor (center/new) on the first ballot. At that point, Hartmann, who finished fourth, missed out on an absolute majority of 4,000 votes, but achieved by far the best result of the unelected.

Government no longer a man’s body

The SP candidate Ylfete Fanaj (40) also won the elections on Sunday. She received support from the Greens, whose candidate Christa Wenger did not contest the second ballot, and, for reasons of agreement, from the centre.

Hartmann of the SVP received the most votes with 51,078 votes. Ylfete Fanaj accounted for 45,053. Claudia Huser (GLP) received the third most votes with 39,674, missing out on joining the Lucerne cantonal government.

With the election of Ylfete Fanaj, the SP can not only end the eight-year phase in which it was no longer represented in the government. In addition to Tschuor, a second woman will also be in government. Eight middle-class men have governed the canton of Lucerne for the past eight years. Three of them did not participate in the elections. (she/SDA)
