Gone are the days when computer geeks lived in dark basements. Today, they sit in state-of-the-art surveillance centers in front of massive video walls, monitoring their customers’ systems in real time.
But despite the latest technology, attacks are on the rise. This is evident from the latest ransomware attacks on the NZZ and the Basel Education Department.
The Basel Ministry of Education is not alone. The national center for cyber security counted 34,527 reports of cyber incidents. This is a sharp increase compared to the 21,714 reports in the previous year.
Everything related to cybercrime was reported. Think of fake threatening emails from the police, phishing – an attempt to steal data – and hacked Twitter and Facebook profiles.
The majority of the reports, namely 85 percent, come from the general public. The rest comes from companies, associations and governments.
The Cyber Security Center estimates that the number of reports has more to do with the platform becoming more well known. On the other hand, new forms of threat have emerged.
All reports are voluntary. Until now there is no obligation to report cyber attacks. However, the National Council wants operators of critical infrastructure, such as healthcare and energy suppliers, to report major cyber attacks in the future. (brother)

In such an attack, the hackers steal a company’s data and render it useless. This is usually followed by a ransom demand. The attackers are demanding huge sums of money so that the companies either regain access to the data or have it not published.
Such attacks can be costly. It is not the ransom payments that are expensive, but the losses caused by corporate failures.
Anyone who falls victim to such an attack should immediately contact IT experts. “These kinds of attacks are usually new territory for companies. That’s why IT experts can help to minimize the damage and come to a solution quickly,” says Sandro Bachmann (32), Senior Cyber Security Analyst at Infoguard.
Employees should be trained regularly so that you don’t end up in this unpleasant situation in the first place. “Human error is often the cause of a leak. But the problem is systemic. There is often a lack of awareness of these dangers and clear rules of conduct,” says Bachmann.
The companies have a responsibility here. You must sensitize your employees. “Ultimately, the company is responsible – because mistakes happen everywhere. As a company you have to set up and maintain a flawless security system,” says the expert.
companies, such as info watch help if these measures don’t work and you’ve been hacked. Both individuals and companies can get help in the event of an attack.
However, for companies with particularly sensitive data, there is also the option of preventive protection. In this case, IT experts monitor the company data. «In our cyber defense center, we monitor our customers’ systems in real time. Our experts immediately register suspicious behavior and categorize it according to danger level,” says the cyber specialist.
Experts recognize patterns in the attacks and can thus minimize the damage – because often the same gangs are behind the attacks. The experts are also ready to assist in ransom negotiations.
