Anger about mega compensation for ex-customs boss Bock

Customs director Christian Bock is leaving.

Treasury Secretary Karin Keller-Sutter (59) guards the federal treasury — and cuts corners. That’s her job. With this departure in her own kingdom, the treasurer has to dig deep into her pockets: Keller-Sutter, together with Christian Bock (55), came to the conclusion that he can no longer be the customs boss and is splitting up by mutual agreement. Bock was criticized and also unpopular with the staff.

The Finance Department (FDF) put him on the road with a golden parachute – but not even out the door for the time being: he was still available to the department for two months for special tasks. Then a notice period of three months applies – also with full salary. After that, Bock can look forward to a severance payment of twelve months’ salary, spokesperson Pascal Hollenstein confirms to Blick. “20 minutes” had previously reported on it.

Up to 330,000 francs

The FDF explains that the severance payment is regulated in the federal personnel regulation. “We stick to that,” says Hollenstein. Bock was in wage class 37. According to the federal wage table, the gross salary of the former customs chief is between 310,512 and 330,780 francs. There are also possible surcharges. So he doesn’t have to starve.

The high severance pay is met with criticism from politicians from left to right. “It should not be allowed that civil servants who already have a permanent and well-paid job also receive a golden parachute,” says SVP National Council member Martina Bircher (39). “Federal employees should be treated like everyone else,” she demands.

Many attempts have been made to cancel these golden parachutes. Only recently did the competent committee of the Council of States oppose a ban. Bircher does not believe that as an employer you are not attractive without a parachute. “Jobs in the federal government are already privileged. Additional incentives are not necessary.” Bircher now wants to keep fighting. “We will not give up.”

“An Insolence”

The left is anything but enthusiastic. “Severance payments to members of top management are inappropriate and, given the cutbacks to the rest of the staff, a cheek,” writes SP Reich Councilor Samira Marti (29) on Twitter.

But it is also clear that such severance payments are common in the private sector. You can avoid costly legal disputes. But if the taxpayer has to fund them while the federal government saves, they are disruptive. The golden parachute drew criticism when former asylum chief Alard du Bois-Reymond and Jürg Marti left as head of statistics. (bro/dba)
