Special rules for people from Ticino and Uri on the Gotthard highway?

Tired of hours of traffic jams on the Gotthard. It is enough for some national councils of Uri and Ticino. The middle politician Fabio Regazzi (60) calls on the Bundesrat in a postulate to check whether a special arrangement for Uri and Ticino on the Gotthard is technically and legally possible.

“Workers stand in traffic jams for hours surrounded by tourists,” the Ticino politician told the “Bote der Urschweiz”. To support local trade, the inhabitants of Uri and Ticino must be able to get through the Gotthard more quickly. Regazzi thinks about free travel to the tunnel entrance in different ways. Either the hard shoulder must be opened up to cars from one of the two cantons. Or in the event of a traffic jam, the closed motorway slip roads would only be accessible to local residents.

Problems with EU agreements

Regazzi assumes that several hundred vehicles would benefit from the special rule. However, as this rule discriminates against other cars, it is unlikely that this rule is compatible with the land transport agreement with the EU. According to the postulate, signed by three other Ticino National Councilors and the only National Councilor from Uri, the Bundesrat should check whether a privilege is possible, writes the “Bote der Urschweiz”.

The district administrator of Uri recently referred to a booth initiative that wants to introduce a reservation system on the Gotthard. Still other parliamentarians are in favor of compensation. (lazy)
