The National Council wants to promote more sports activities with federal money

With the support of Jugend+Sport, children and young people should be able to play sports without being a member of a club, for example in “open sports halls” projects. That is what the National Council wants. (theme photo)

Nowadays, children and young people who want to benefit from J+S funds must be members of a sports club, the WBK-N wrote about the motion. The majority of the committee wants to change this, so that projects in “open sports halls” can benefit from this, among other things.

Nationally there are now more than 250 projects in “open sports halls”. Particularly in winter, 2 to 18-year-olds could, for example, play sports there at the weekend, says Commission spokesperson Simon Stadler (centre/UR). The Idée Sport Foundation alone, the largest provider of “open sports halls” in the country, annually registers more than 140,000 children and young people participating in the offers.

The organizers of these offers would not be entitled to Y+S contributions today. However, there is interest in these projects on the basis of the Sports Promotion Ordinance, the WBK-N wrote about the initiative. The range of sports available to children and young people also had a positive effect on their mental health.

The motion therefore requires that the Sports Promotion Regulation be amended accordingly. The Bundesrat agreed to the request. Sports Minister Viola Amherd said children and young people who are less interested in sports are not sufficiently addressed by today’s offerings.

From the point of view of sports financing, the opening of J+S is therefore appropriate. The Federal Council intends to use the requested grants within the framework of existing funds. The Council passed the motion by 130 votes to 48, with one abstention.

The SVP had objections: Your spokesperson Andreas Gafner (EDU/BE) said that the federal government already contributes to the sports infrastructure. Those who offer accessible sports can still organize themselves today and apply for Y+S contributions.
