Space Jam 2: A New Legacy may not have been the most glorious return to the big screen for Warner Brothers icon Bugs Bunny. Released at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, the movie felt a lot like a promotional event for Warner’s streaming service HBO Max, which fell mercilessly flat with critics (it also only got a weak 2 out of 5 stars from FILMSTARTS).
Especially given the announcement announced at the time that all Warner films that would appear in cinemas in 2021 parallel to the cinema release would also be available on its own streaming service, this film had a bad aftertaste. Who needs cinema culture when you can watch the Looney Tunes from the comfort of your home?
But now Bugs Bunny should get his own movie again. Named after screenwriter and director Robert Rugan (“The Curse Of Bridge Hollow”) own information hired by Warner Bros. to write a screenplay for a new Bugs Bunny movie. As with the previous screen excursions of the Looney Tunes icon, this time it will again be a hybrid film consisting of live action and animation.
Is Bugs coming to the movies again?
There is currently no further information regarding the plot or cast list. In addition, it is not yet known whether the new Bugs Bunny movie will appear in theaters or will be produced as exclusive content for HBO Max. As a Looney Tunes fan, the author of these lines naturally hopes that Bugs and his Toon colleagues can make the cinemas unsafe again.
Should the as-yet-untitled Bugs Bunny movie hit theaters, it would mark Bugs Bunny’s fourth starring role, following Space Jam, Space Jam 2: A New Legacy, and the often-overlooked Looney Tunes: Back. In Action from Gremlins director Joe Dante, starring Academy Award winner Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) alongside Bugs & Co.
