A broad alliance of health organizations advocates measures against sugar consumption. 2.2 million people in Switzerland suffer from cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes or cancer, Allianz Nutrition Health reported to the media in Bern on Tuesday. These diseases account for 80 percent of healthcare costs. Sugar plays a major role in the causes.

Sweet drinks and sweets account for the majority of sugar consumption with an estimated 85 percent or 85 grams per person per day, according to this report. This is compounded by sugar’s addictive potential, as it affects the reward center of the brain. Further measures than those already voluntarily decided are needed, the alliance wrote.

Every sixth child is overweight

Sugar consumption is especially problematic for children. Every sixth child in Switzerland is overweight, and every third child in the lower educated classes. According to one study, 94 percent of foods targeted at children do not meet World Health Organization (WHO) criteria.

Allianz advocates a ban on sugar and sweeteners in baby food, as well as a sugar limit and a ban on sweeteners in children’s products. Schools and day structures are not allowed to serve sweet drinks and food.

Advertising ban and soda tax

In addition, the alliance is demanding an advertising ban on high-sugar products aimed at children, no special offers on sugary drinks, and no health promotions on sugary foods.

In addition, the state should tax drinks with sugar or sweeteners. All products should carry the Nutri-Score nutrition designation and access to fruits and vegetables should be made easier.

Nearly 50 organizations are involved in the partnership, such as the Consumer Protection Foundation, Kankerbond, Pediatricians and Dentists Association, diabetes associations and cantonal Red Cross departments. (SDA)
