Strong words, sausages and risotto: Bernese trade unionists, leftists and greens celebrated Labor Day on Monday. In the early evening, SP federal councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59) mingled with the several hundred participants on the Bundesplatz.

There were speeches by, among others, National Councilors Flavia Wasserfallen (44, SP) and Natalie Imboden (52, Greens). Both campaigned for the referendum against the ‘skewed’ reform of the pension fund. “In 2024, we will also end this reform at the ballot box,” Wasserfallen announced.
She and Imboden also called for participation in the June 14 women’s strike. “The time when women were fobbed off with low wages is over,” says Imboden.
In the late afternoon several hundred people marched in the old town of Bern, from the Kramgasse to the parliament building. «More pay. More pension. Equality now!” was on the banner at the head of the parade. May Day celebrations in Bern passed off peacefully and without incident. (SDA)
