Customs officers use an excavator to destroy counterfeit branded furniture. The procedure is simplified for small shipments. (archive image)

He passed on the message on Wednesday about a corresponding change in the law. Now it is Parliament’s turn.

Brand piracy and other violations of intellectual property rights are increasing worldwide, the Federal Council writes in the notice accompanying the draft. Swiss companies are particularly affected by counterfeit goods. In addition, there are tax losses or even health risks for consumers.

The Bundesrat wants to take this into account when amending the law. The owners of intellectual property rights should be able to request that they be informed about the seizure of the suspect goods only if the customer objects to the destruction. As a result, both customs and rightholders can reduce the administrative burden.
