Federal Council wants to analyze emergency management

The Federal Council has the emergency management in federal buildings analyzed by an external body. He follows a mandate already given by Parliament’s administrative delegation.

The state government made the decision at its meeting on Wednesday. The administrative delegation of the federal councils had already commissioned external expertise in February and suggested that the Federal Council should follow suit. This is intended to create an overall picture of the situation and joint planning.

Based on the results of this inventory, a decision will be taken later on any further measures and optimization of the emergency response.

Critical after evacuation

The revision was prompted by an incident on February 14, 2023, when a man in a camouflage suit appeared at the south entrance of the Federal Palace. He had previously parked his car on the Bundesplatz. Traces of explosives were found on the man’s clothing, after which the man was arrested.

Because of the find, the buildings around the Bundesplatz were evacuated. Because the suspect’s car has been identified as a potential danger by the police and has been examined by a robot; no explosives found. The man was later placed in an institution in the context of social assistance benefits.

Criticism of the evacuation arose on the same day. The parliamentary services also took immediate measures. For example, if the parliament building is evacuated in the future, the alarm horns will have to sound and councillors, parliamentary staff and other authorized persons will be quickly informed by text message.
