Former Zug government councilor Beat Villiger (66, center) used drugs during his term in office. The Lucerne prosecutor’s office sentenced him to a suspended sentence and a fine for driving a car in Lucerne in the summer of 2022 after consuming crack.
Simon Kopp, spokesman for the Lucerne public prosecutor’s office, confirmed a report from the Zentralplus online portal on Wednesday. The criminal order of the public prosecutor’s office became final in March 2023.
Villiger was sentenced to a suspended fine of CHF 40 80 per day and a fine of CHF 900 for using illegal narcotics and driving under the influence of drugs. Then there are the litigation costs.
According to Zentralplus, Villiger consumed crack one evening in August 2022 at a hotel in Lucerne. Crack is cocaine-based and smoked through a pipe. According to the criminal order, he inhaled six to seven puffs of the substance.
The next day he drove a car in the Geissenstein district when he was unable to drive. There he was checked by the police.
A few days later, on September 5, Government Councilman Villiger took a break on medical advice. On October 19, he resigned early and immediately as a member of the government, officially for health reasons.
Villiger’s term would have ended at the end of 2022 anyway, as he did not stand as a candidate in the general renewal elections in Zug on October 2. The trained curator has been a member of the government council since 2007 and headed the security department.
It’s not the first time Villiger has made headlines outside politics: a few years ago, he loaned a car to an acquaintance, even though she didn’t have a driver’s license. The Lucerne public prosecutor’s office opened a criminal investigation against Villiger in 2017. This is also because the woman suddenly presented a purchase contract that showed that she was the owner of the car. It was suspected that the two then drafted the contract and made it retroactive. However, in the spring of 2018, the public prosecutor legally closed the investigation.
In the course of this, Villiger confessed in the “Sonntagsblick”: The person to whom he lent the car was his business. “We have a child together. I have an illegitimate daughter. She was born in 2012,” he said in an interview. Despite this, Villiger was re-elected. (SDA/brother)
