Swiss army to protect Russian embassy

The Russian ambassador in Bern, Sergei Garmonin, regularly provokes people, most recently with threats against an NZZ journalist.

The Russian embassy in Bern provokes at every opportunity. On Wednesday, she even threatened a NZZ journalist with imprisonment and hard labor. He had visited the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine for an article. The public threats are also ‘unacceptable’ for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of FDP federal councilor Ignazio Cassis (62). It wants to take the Russian ambassador to heart and “say unequivocally that freedom of information and the media is guaranteed in the Swiss Federal Constitution”.

The Russian offensive war against Ukraine also affects the Bern canton police. Because she is responsible for protecting the embassies in Bern. But now she is reaching her limits when it comes to protecting the Russian representation, reports the “Berner Zeitung”. By the end of the year, she had transferred embassy protection duties worth nearly CHF 350,000 directly to the security company Protectas AG.

The police had to deploy more and more personnel

This is a first. According to police spokeswoman Isabelle Wüthrich, it was the first time that the cantonal police had to call on the support of a private security service to guard the embassy. The direct award of the contract without regular tendering is justified by the urgency of the project due to “unforeseen events”. The war in Ukraine is meant.

For this reason, the Federal Police (Fedpol) has “constantly increased” the level of protection, so that the cantonal police of Bern must “deploy significantly more personnel to protect the embassy”. In addition to the deployment of a private company, the cantonal police also demand reinforcements from the army. The police have asked Defense for personal support.

This application is still under investigation by the federal government. About ten years ago, the National Council designated the protection of embassies as a civilian task. If military personnel were again deployed for this task years later, it would be a change of strategy. (dba)
