Even foreigners want to curb immigration

Switzerland is growing and growing.

Switzerland has a population of 8.8 million – and that number is growing every year. According to the Federal Bureau of Statistics (BfS), the 9 million mark could be broken this year. The main driver of population growth is immigration. One in four people in the country does not have a Swiss passport.

A majority of the population believes that this cannot continue. According to a survey by Tamedia and “20 Minutes”, nearly two-thirds of those surveyed support tighter immigration restrictions.

Even GLP supporters want restrictions

Not surprisingly, the proportion of those critical of immigration is highest among SVP sympathizers. 93 percent think stricter regulation is needed. But the demand also finds a majority among the other civil parties. Of FDP supporters, 36 percent say yes and 37 percent tend to say yes to the question of whether Switzerland should restrict immigration more – a total of 73 percent.

In the center that is 71 percent and even among the green-liberals a majority of respondents are more or less in favor of stricter immigration controls at 51 percent. For the SP and the Greens, that share is only 41 and 37 percent respectively.

The longer in Switzerland, the more critical

The result is also to be expected that the higher educated are more open to immigration than the lower educated. What’s exciting, though, is the fact that even foreigners are relatively critical of immigration.

65 percent of the Swiss are in favor of stricter regulations and 51 percent of foreigners. The longer someone is in Switzerland, the more critical he or she is about immigration. 47 percent of foreigners who have lived in Switzerland for less than five years are in favor of stricter restrictions. This is 67 percent for those who have lived here since birth.

SVP has announced initiative

The results are grist to the mill of the SVP, which will focus entirely on its favorite subject of immigration in the election year. The party announced a new citizens’ initiative on this subject last year. The demand: from 9 million inhabitants, the Bundesrat must take measures and, among other things, renegotiate the agreement on the free movement of persons with the EU.

However, the concrete text of the initiative is not yet available. In the summer, the SVP of Zurich, who is in charge, will decide on the launch of the initiative, writes the “Tages-Anzeiger”.
