About 3.2 billion francs from Afghanistan are blocked in Basel

3.2 billion francs from Afghanistan are blocked in Switzerland in an account at the Bank for International Settlements in Basel (back right, archive photo).

The account runs on the private foundation “Fund for the Afghan People”. So far, none of the money has been distributed. The Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs (EDA) confirmed this on Tuesday at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. Funds have been blocked since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan in August 2021.

The money in the BIS account is set aside for “specific tasks consistent with the purpose of the foundation, including stabilizing exchange rates and prices in Afghanistan,” the FDFA said.

The “Tagesanzeiger” first reported on Tuesday that the money in the account should not be used for humanitarian aid, even though the assets had already yielded several million francs in interest.
