SVP wins Ticino parliamentary elections

Ticino parliamentary elections were not counted until Monday evening. The SVP had to wait a long time before they heard the good news: they won seats while the Lega dei Ticinesi lost seats. The Left Green and FDP also lost voter shares. With the emergence of new political movements, the fragmentation of the Grand Council of Ticino is increasing.

The center is able to keep its 16 seats and, due to the poor performance of the Lega, is now the second strongest force in the Grand Council of Ticino.

FDP remains the strongest force

The SVP gains another 2 seats and now has 10.3 percent of the electorate and 9 seats. The Lega dei Ticinesi, with which the SVP has joined the list for the government council elections, loses 4 seats and now has 14 instead of the previous 18 seats.

The FDP also lost. However, with 21 instead of 23 seats (23.8 percent of the electorate), it remains the strongest force in the Ticino parliament, which consists of 90 members. The SP loses 1 seat and now has 12 MPs in the Grand Council, the Greens also lose 1 seat and now have 5 seats.

New parties in parliament

The new political movements “HelvEthica Ticino” and “Avanti con Ticino & Lavoro” immediately gained 2 and 3 seats respectively in the Grand Council of Ticino.

“HelvEthica Ticino” emerged from the Corona pandemic and wants to stand up for the “rights of the individual”. “Avanti con Ticino & Lavoro” is led by former SP politician and economist Amalia Mirante, who probably alienated some voters from her former party.

The Green Liberals also make it to Ticino’s parliament for the first time, winning 2 seats. Turnout was 57 percent. (SDA)
