According to a survey, more than half of the Swiss population would like to live in a more climate-friendly way.

Is a product really as sustainable as advertised? A new study shows that the Swiss are very careful when it comes to such promises, for example on food packaging. Only 12 percent of respondents say they have confidence in companies’ sustainability promises.

A majority believes that companies only emphasize the positive and hide the negative. The Swiss assume that the sustainable use of companies is mainly so-called greenwashing for PR purposes. “72 percent think companies want to put themselves in a good light,” says research leader Michael Hermann (51).

Despite this critical attitude, the research also shows that almost three-quarters of the Swiss buy products that promise sustainability.

More products from Switzerland desired

The Swiss would also like to do more for the environment. More than half of the population would also like to live in a more climate-friendly way. Many say they lack transparency and climate-friendly alternatives.

About two-thirds also want companies to produce more in Switzerland and do more for older workers and trainees.

More rules for climate protection

How should politicians respond to these wishes? In the social field, the majority are not in favor of stricter rules, but rely on the companies’ own initiative. On the other hand, when it comes to climate protection, respondents are also in favor of political regulation through corporate laws and regulations.

62 percent of those surveyed would now support a new corporate social responsibility initiative, with a focus on activities within Switzerland, they said in the survey.

The research was carried out by the research institute Sotomo on behalf of the Federation of Migros Cooperatives. For this purpose, 2797 people from German-, French- and Italian-speaking Switzerland were interviewed online. Due to the statistical weighting of the data, the results are representative. (she)
