Given climate change, it is time to act, said the four initiators of this ‘Marche bleue’ (blue march) on Saturday at the start. The time for talking is over.
The four initiators are university professor and climate scientist Julia Steinberger, lawyer Irène Wettstein, infectious disease specialist Valérie d’Acremont and political scientist Bastienne Joerchel. According to her, allowing climate change would have serious consequences for health, nutrition and biodiversity.
Instead of dwelling on the goals of the Paris climate agreement, the world is heading for an increase in average temperature of 3.2 degrees: said the Green Alfonso Gomez of the Geneva city council in a speech to the start of the march. In 2015, the international community in Paris agreed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees compared to pre-industrial times.
The 224 kilometer long march leads from Geneva via Lausanne, Neuchâtel and Freiburg to Bern. Meetings with local politicians, business representatives and local associations are planned at the podium locations. The initiators assume that about 150 people will participate per stage.
