And how was she? How did the new head of the Justice and Police Department (EJPD), Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59), fare in the acclimatization phase?
The first 100 days typically serve as a reliable period for politicians to issue an initial interim report. Does it look like the new federal councilor is going to prove himself? Does she keep what she promised us (and we from her)? Or maybe Parliament made a mistake in the elections? Those kinds of questions.
The new federal councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59) took stock of her first 100 days of government in Zurich on Monday. She described her election to the Federal Council on December 7, 2022 as a “surprise”. But, and it was important for her to emphasize that it wasn’t a coincidence.
Surprise or coincidence, EBS, as the first representative of the Canton of Jura is also known in the Federal Council, was very happy to be on the Federal Council. Because: here you can change something. “I like it when my life is useful,” she said.
The SP judge had a difficult start. She played the role of a mediator in the legal matter. It concerned the change of canton from Moutier from Bern to Jura and an agreement on financial liquidation.
In terms of foreign policy, she traveled to Brussels to sign a declaration on migration with other Schengen countries. Migration policies between European countries have been slow for months.
The migration situation is also tense in this country. The asylum system in the cantons is in danger of becoming overloaded. The SVP is already accusing Baume-Schneider of bringing more problems into the country than providing solutions to the “asylum chaos”.
Certainly: they are the expected bourgeois poison arrows on the left Bundesrat. And yet she barely has time to catch her breath. In Switzerland, immigration is likely to be one of the really big campaign issues of this election year.
Baume-Schneider also used the balance sheet to look ahead. Formulate your goals, ambitions and topics. She wants to align her work with the keywords «protection and participation».
And so her appearance is also a gesture. A promise. Because there is a lot at stake for her: more protection against domestic and sexual violence, protection of the weakest against exploitation, rights for non-binary persons and rainbow families, good framework conditions for the economy through the free movement of persons, the participation of refugees in our society. Baume-Schneider said: “I will do my utmost to ensure that more people with status S find a job.”
Diversity is very important to her. According to Baume-Schneider, each new population group that is integrated means progress for the country. She also held her media conference during the first 100 days at the cultural center “Schiffbau” in Zurich-West. Zurich West symbolizes Switzerland for them. Once an industrial location with workers, today it is a vibrant, diverse cultural district.
So the first 100 days. Good days? rigidity.
